Here is a basic guide to Wiring sizes to use for Power and Ground cables. There are obviously higher rated cables when you look into professional wiring kits and the cables themselves can handle higher current draw, but this is just a basic guide to keeping it safe. 2/0 AWG - 400 amps 0 AWG- 325 amps 1 AWG - 250 amps 2 AWG - 200 amps 4 AWG - 125 amps 6 AWG - 80 amps 8 AWG - 50 amps 10 AWG - 30 amps 12 AWG - 20 amps 14 AWG - 15 amps 16 AWG - 7.5 amps Please check the fuse rating on your amp or look in your user manual for your amp to see what the current draw will be. If you are running multiple amps, make sure that the cable to your distribution block from the battery is able to handle it.

Sub Boxes that have a volume bigger than 30 litres will have to be braced. A box smaller than that will not have large panel areas that will flex. Bracing is good for 2 things, it dampens the standing waves inside the box and it dampens the resonating speaker box walls. Personally, I noticed a huge difference in sound quality and pressure inside the car (Slot ported box with 8 x 250 RMS 10" subs) once I braced the box to the body of the car with thread bar - bolted from underneath the car and then I also braced the inside of the box with 4 x 1" Dowel Rods. Once the box is no longer flexing and moving around in the boot, it makes a huge difference. Every DB counts and I managed a gain roughly an extra 1.7DBs from reinforcing my box and bracing it properly. I would highly recommend bracing your sub box if you have any large panel areas. A cheap and easy upgrade that works!!!

If you are not sure if your subwoofer is blown or not you can use a multimeter to test and see if the subwoofer is really blown. Multimeters are one of the best ways to completely verify if the sub is blown or there can be any other problem that is causing distortion or another malfunctioning. Subwoofers and speakers blow when over-powered or if they continue to work for a long time above the RMS power. How to use a Multimeter to check if your Subwoofer/Speaker is blown: We are basically checking the Resistance of the Voice coil. The condition will decide on the functionality of the Subwoofer/Speaker. Turn off your subwoofer completely and unplug any power source Remove all audio inputs or any cables to make your subwoofer free Remove the subwoofer from the enclosure and place on a flat surface Attach the positive multimeter probe to the positive terminal of voice coil of your subwoofer Connect the negative multimeter probe to the negative terminal of voice coil Turn on the multimeter and you will see the resistance Result: If there is no resistance at all, it means that your voice coils are damaged When the reading shifts abruptly, that means your voice coil is damaged completely. It is actually a strong indication of a blown voice coil. If the reading is above 1.0 ohm, your coils are safe and sound and the problem may be somewhere else.

There are 2 different kinds of Amplifiers. Class D and Class AB which means there are 2 different calculations. Class AB: Total RMS Wattage divided by 0.50 Amp Efficiency divided by 13.8 Volts equals Current Draw in Amperes. Class D: Total RMS Wattage divided by 0.75 Amp Efficiency divided by 13.8 Volts equals Current Draw in Amperes

Crossovers basically comes from the idea of crossing over from one frequency range to the next. It acts as a filter that blocks out unwanted frequencies to a speaker or group of speakers. It is useful because it allows you to send each speaker the group of frequencies that it will play most efficiently and effectively. The 3 basic ways a crossover will divide frequencies: High-pass filter - filters higher frequencies to pass through to speakers Low-pass filter - Filters low frequencies to pass through to speakers Band-pass filter - A combination of a High and Low Pass Crossover to allow a range of frequencies above and below two chosen crossover frequencies. There are 2 basic types of crossovers: Electronic Crossover: An electronic crossover uses a DSP chip or Microprocessor to divide frequencies. Electronic Crossovers are typically more expensive than Passive Crossovers. Passive Crossover: A Passive Crossover uses resistors, capacitors, inductors, or a combination of all three in order to achieve the desired crossover point for a speaker or group of speakers. Passive crossovers can be advantageous, since they are usually less expensive to produce and, in the case of component sets designed by a manufacturer, they offer you a great transition between tweeter and midrange… right out of the box. The disadvantage is that the filters themselves can be large, so they are typically intended for smaller speakers. Subwoofers, on the other hand, would require very large and heavy inductors to handle the necessary power and allow for only the low frequencies to pass through a smaller filter.  Passive crossovers are often included with component and high-end coaxial speakers.

The rule is, 10 times the power - will give you a 10db increase. If you are hearing a whine through your speakers, it could be one of 4 things... * Alternator whine * Signal wires/RCA's too close to your amplifier power cable * Head unit grounding * General grounding Firstly, make sure your patch cords are running on the opposite side of the car to your power cables. If the whine is still there, the easiest and cheapest way to silence it would be to purchase a Ground Loop Isolator (Average price is £8.00 for a decent one). If that does not work, check your grounding. Find a good ground spot that has no paint (A good place is removing the seatbelt and using the seat belt buckle end bolt with a ring terminal. File or sand the area so there is no paint, and that should do the trick.

Enclosure types: Sealed box — Airtight Enclosure. Sealed boxes are best suited for music with a tight and accurate bass. In general these boxes have a high power handling (does tend to require more power than a ported box). Sealed boxes are better for rock music. Ported box — A ported box allows movement of air in and out of the enclosure. You get a much lower bass response than you would from a sealed box. You get a lot more output from a ported box than a sealed box. You mainly get slot ported boxes and round ported boxes. Ported boxes are better for hip hop/rap, house and techno. Bandpass box — Designed for ultimate bang!! The woofer is mounted inside a dual-chambered box; the woofer fires from the sealed chamber into the ported chamber, and sound waves emerge from the ported side. Because the sound that comes out of the port is extra loud within a narrow frequency range, bandpass boxes are considered super efficient. Their aggressive sound is popular with many hip-hop, techno, and metal fans.

Power — Pay attention to RMS power ratings, not peak. RMS ratings measure continuous power handling or output and are a much more realistic measure than peak power. Make sure the sub can at least handle your amp's output power. Sensitivity — A sub that has a higher sensitivity rating requires less power to produce the same amount of sound. Frequency range — Frequency range gives you an idea of how low a sub plays. Keep in mind, though, that the actual performance of the sub can depend on variables, like the box type it's mounted in. Enclosure type — In general, sealed boxes give you the deepest, most accurate sound, while ported and bandpass enclosures produce more volume. Number of voice coils — Dual voice coil subwoofers are a popular choice among car audio enthusiasts who want more flexibility in wiring their sound systems. While typical subwoofers have a single voice coil, dual voice coil (DVC) subwoofers use two separate voice coils, each with its own connections, mounted on one cylinder, connected to a common cone. Size of the woofer — It's a never-ending question — You need to consider sensitivity, enclosure type, and available power. If your ultimate goal is to have a system that plays loud and low, go for bigger subs. But don't underestimate small subs. Properly powered and in the right enclosure, smaller subs can put out a decent sound. Impedance — Most subwoofers are rated at 4 ohms impedance, but 2-ohm, 8-ohm, and dual voice coil subwoofers have become commonplace. When you've chosen a subwoofer, look for amplifiers that will match up to your sub in terms of power rating and impedance.

A monoblock amplifier is a 1 channel amp (mono literally means 1). Since bass is omnidirectional, meaning you can tell where it's coming from, it isn't necessary to run subwoofers in stereo. you may see 2 sets of speaker teminals on monoblock amps and they will be labeled as either speaker 1 and speaker 2 terminals, or simply + + and - -. that is because the two + terminals are connected to each other inside the amp, as are the two - terminals. The second set is there simply to make it easier to connect multiple speakers to the amplifier. Do not confuse the two sets of terminals as separate channels. if you're not sure whether an amp is a mono or two channel amp, you can look at the labels above the speaker terminals. A multichannel amplifier will have the separate channels labeled as Left and Right, or L and R.

Both batteries and capacitors are electronic devices capable of storing electrical charge and they seem awfully similar as they both release electrical energy. However, the way they do it vary dramatically. While a battery stores potential energy in the chemical form, a capacitor stores its potential energy in an electrostatic field. In simple terms, batteries store and distribute energy in a linear form – like a constant electrical flow. Capacitors, on the other hand, distribute energy in short bursts. A capacitor stores energy directly onto the plates which makes charging/discharging a bit faster than batteries. However, batteries are capable of regaining their stored energy much efficiently and for a longer duration than capacitors. Comparison between the two: Battery A battery stores its potential energy in the form of chemical energy. It has a better energy density which means more energy per volume can be stored. It is basically a DC component. Charge/discharge rate is relatively slower than capacitors. Charges are not separated in a battery. Battery runs for a longer time. Capacitor A capacitor uses electrostatic field to store electrical energy. It has a comparatively low energy density than a battery. It is ideally used for AC applications. Charge/discharge rate is usually faster than a battery because it stores energy directly onto the plates. Electrons are pre-stocked in capacitors. Capacitors discharge almost instantaneously.

Doing the Big 3 Upgrade will improve your cars electrical system as well as its Current Handling. This should actually be one of the first modifications when upgrading your sound system. The factory wiring is great for basic systems. I would recommend doing your Big 3 Upgrade using 0 Gauge wire. It has a great current flow with very little resistance. This new decrease in resistance will reduce light dimming, reduce voltage drops, stabilize voltage and current flow, and decrease the strain being put on your vehicle’s electrical charging system. What gets Upgraded: Alternator positive cable that runs to the positive terminal of the battery Negative battery cable that runs from the battery to the vehicles chassis Chassis grounding cable that runs to the engine block
